Standards and Benchmarks

 

Content Standards refer to the major ideas in any subject area. The standards in each subject are constant across all grade levels; the scope of what is taught and assessed varies at grade levels.
 
Benchmarks are subdivisions of the ideas stated in the standards and convey the scope of must be learned to attain the standards.

 

STANDARD 1: Creative Expression - Students create and/ or perform to express ideas and feelings Benchmark 1: Sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music (National Standard #1). 
Benchmark 2: Perform on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music (National Standard #2). 
Benchmark 3: Improvise melodies, variations and accompaniments (National Standard #3). 
Benchmark 4: Compose and arrange songs within specific guidelines (National Standard #4).  
STANDARD 2: Cultural Heritage - Students will understand the cultural contributions (social, ethical, political, religious dimensions) of the arts, how the arts shape and are shaped by prevailing cultural and social beliefs and values, and recognize exemplary works from a variety of cultures and historical periods. Benchmark 1: Understand relationships between music and the other arts, and the disciplines outside the arts. (National Standard #8) 
Benchmark 2: Understand music in relationship to history and culture (National Standard #9).  
STANDARD 3: Criticism and Aesthetics - Students will reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of art works.
Benchmark 1: Read and notate music (National Standard #5).  
Benchmark 2: Listen to, analyze and describe music (National Standard #6).

Benchmark 3: Evaluate music and music performance (National Standard #7).
