Whittier Elementary School prides itself on the many accomplishments we achieve within our school community. National Blue Ribbon School: Congratulations to Whittier Elementary parents, students and staff for our designation as a National Blue Ribbon School! This designates us as in the top 5% of all schools in Iowa and top 15% nationally in terms of outstanding academic performance.
American Legion Award: Two students were recipients of the American Legion Award. One student went on to place 2nd in the District of American Legion Contest. These students wrote an essay of what the American Flag means to them. This award was in appreciation of exhibiting responsibility of citizenship by the display of the UNITED STATES FLAG.
Reflections: Congratulations to our students who received City and National acclaim in the 2015-2016 National PTA Reflections Arts Program: Let Your Imagination Fly. . .Entries are judged primarily on how well the student uses his or her artistic vision to portray the theme, originality and creativity. Submissions are reviewed by experts in the visual, literary and performing arts.
Presidential Awards: Whittier School is proud to announce twenty-four 5th grade students earned the Presidential Academic Award for Educational Excellence and the Presidential Outstanding Academic Achievement Award.
Playground Equipment: Principal Mr. Kenney knows that an active student is an attentive student - which is why he strongly supports playtime at Whittier. Whittier's PTA took on the project for funding our new playground equipment. This equipment now provides innovative, engaging and classic fun for all ages.
Battle of the Books: On April 12th, over 20 teams representing all 4 elementaries and CMS participated in the first annual CCSD Battle of the Books. Teams were made up of 3-6 participants in grades 4-6. Each team was responsible for reading 10 preselected books. On the night of the battle, teams were given 50 questions about the books over 5 rounds. The team with the most questions correct was the winner. The winners this year were on Team Book Domination which included students from Whittier and CMS.
Unity Day: Together against bullying - united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion.
