Portrait of a Graduate

1.) What is Portrait of a Graduate?

A Portrait of a Graduate is a set of competencies and supporting skills that a community agrees its young people need to thrive in learning, work, and life.

2.) Why was Portrait of a Graduate created?

Today’s students face an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world as they are doing the work of "growing up". Ever changing job markets demand competencies, skills, and knowledge than were ever needed before. We are finding that the college and career readiness that K-12 schools traditionally provide is not enough to equitably prepare our students for the future opportunities for learning, work, and life that this time of accelerating change offers. Our goal is to develop learners and graduates that are future ready!

3.) How will Portrait of a Graduate affect our students moving forward?

The Portrait of a Graduate will provide students with opportunities integrated into daily curriculum and instruction to learn, practice, reflect, and build upon the community based competencies and skills identified in the Clinton Community School District's Portrait of a Graduate.

4.) How does this initiative differ from others?

Portrait of a Graduate focus on competencies and skills identified by the community as opposed to content knowledge identified in the Iowa Common Core curricula. The Portrait of a Graduate works in conjunction with content curriculum, helping learners become well-rounded and competent in, not only content knowledge, but also critical skills required for their future endeavors.

Thank you, Wesley Golden - CCSD Assistant Superintendent, for explaining Portrait of a Graduate in great detail. We hope this gives students and caregivers more insight!
