The Brain Health Retreat Room at the Education Advancement Center (EAC) is a new resource designed to support high school students as they work on brain health strategies. Developed by Brain Health Now, a nonprofit organization founded by Debi Butler, the space aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness while offering practical support for students' mental well-being. Through partnerships and funding from Brain Health Now and their supporters, this room is part of a broader effort to establish similar spaces in high schools across Iowa. The room is designed to be a serene, calming environment with various lighting options, positive wall appliques, and comfortable seating, creating a safe and welcoming space for students to self-regulate and reset.
School Social Worker, Gabe Gluba, who will facilitate the programming in the Brain Health Retreat Room, is excited about the opportunity to make a positive impact on students. Students can access the room for a quick check-in at the start or end of the day or utilize it throughout the day when they need a moment to practice self-regulation techniques. The goal is for students to spend around 15 minutes in the room, though the length of time may vary based on individual needs. When students enter and exit, they complete a Google Form that helps Brain Health Now track room usage, gather data, and assess the program’s effectiveness. In situations that require additional support, the school counselor may be involved to help determine appropriate next steps and resources.
At-Risk Coordinator for CHS and EAC, Sarah Erwin, expressed her belief in the value of the Brain Health Retreat Room, stating, “The Brain Health Retreat Room will undoubtedly benefit our students. This space will provide them with another critical component of care. The room is so inviting, and we are incredibly fortunate to have this available for our students.” With its thoughtful design and intentional focus on reducing stigma, the Brain Health Retreat Room represents a meaningful step toward prioritizing student well-being at EAC. As Brain Health Now continues its efforts to expand these resources, the hope is that more students across Iowa will have access to similar spaces for support and self-care.
